Over 2,000 plant species call this tranquil oasis home. Welcome to the Taipei Botanical Garden! Established in 1896 during the Japanese colonial era, the Taipei Botanical Garden started as a humble nursery. Over time, it blossomed into Taiwan’s very first botanical garden. Today, this eight-hectare sanctuary nestled in the heart of Taipei, serves as a living museum of Taiwan’s rich plant diversity. The Taipei Botanical Garden isn’t just a feast for the eyes. It’s a trip through time. Did you know that this garden sits on land that was once part of the ancient Taipei Lake, dating back 4,500 years? The remnants of this ancient lake make the Taipei Botanical Garden a significant archaeological site. As you wander through the themed gardens, you’ll encounter the unusual, like the Buddhist flora garden, a collection of plants with religious significance. Literature lovers will enjoy the Poetry and Literature Garden, where plants mentioned in ancient Chinese texts come alive. The Taipei Botanical Garden even houses two historical monuments. Look for the elegant two-story brick Herbarium, built in 1924, with a collection of plant specimens from the last century! And don’t miss the Guest House of Imperial Envoys, originally built in 1888, it’s the only Qing-dynasty office left standing in Taiwan. The Taipei Botanical Garden is a testament to the beauty and resilience of nature.
