Hidden within the vibrant Balat district stands the Tahta Minare Cami. Its name, meaning “Wooden Minaret Mosque,” echoes a past architectural feature. Let’s unravel the captivating story of this mosque, a fascinating blend of history and resilience. Tahta Minare Cami’s story begins in 1458, thanks to Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Over time, the elements took their toll on the original structure. The wooden minaret, which gave the mosque its name, eventually needed replacing. In 1865, a local businessman, Halil Ağa, stepped in to completely restore the mosque. He replaced the wooden minaret with a stone one. This act of preservation ensured the mosque’s continued presence in the community. However, the name, Tahta Minare Cami, stuck, preserving the memory of its original design. The minaret you see today isn’t entirely of stone, either. It has a concrete body, and a metal top. The mosque itself is square and made of brick and wood. The entrance from the street leads you through a stone building. The upper floor of this building serves as a residence. Beyond this, you enter a rectangular last prayer place before reaching the main prayer hall. Inside, the walls of the prayer hall are thick, measuring 83 cm, encompassing an area of 74 square meters. The windows, arched and elongated, reflect a more recent architectural style. The mihrab and minbar feature intricate tile work. The ceiling is crafted from wood. There’s a müezzin’s balcony and a women’s section. In the main prayer hall, near the qibla wall, lies a tomb. Hüseyin Efendi, who participated in the conquest of Istanbul, rests here. Notably, this is the only tomb within the mosque’s grounds. The Tahta Minare Cami is a true neighborhood mosque, complete with ablution areas and restrooms. Close by, you’ll find the Tahta Minare Hamam, also part of the Fatih Foundation. The mosque underwent another renovation in 1957, further solidifying its place as a vital part of the community. The Tahta Minare Cami’s story isn’t just about its physical structure. It’s a story of community care, resilience, and the preservation of history.
