Whispers of ancient rituals and swirling dervishes echo within the walls of the Tahirağa Camii. This mosque, also known as the Tahir Ağa Lodge, stands as a testament to Ottoman spirituality and the mystical traditions of the Ushshaki sect. Tahirağa Camii isn’t just a place of prayer. It’s a portal to a time when dervishes practiced their whirling rituals within its sacred space. Located in the Cibali neighborhood of Istanbul’s Fatih district, Tahirağa Camii has witnessed centuries of history. It served as the headquarters for the Salahi branch of the Ushshaki order. This order, known for its mystical practices, held Thursday as their designated day of gathering at Tahirağa Camii. Kapıcıbaşı Seyyid Mehmed Tahir Ağa, the benefactor who gave the lodge its name, played a crucial role in its creation around 1760. The mosque has undergone several restorations throughout its lifespan. A fire in 1782 caused significant damage, followed by major renovations in the 19th century. The Cibali fire in 1918 again threatened the lodge. Thankfully, Hüseyin Vassaf stepped in to oversee its repair, ensuring the Tahirağa Camii survived to share its story. After the closure of lodges in 1925, it served as a residence for the Sheikh and his family. Figures like Sheikh İbrahim Hayrani and Sheikh Mehmed Feyzullah Efendi were instrumental in keeping the spirit of the Naqshbandi order alive at Tahirağa Camii. In the years leading up to its closure as a lodge, notable figures like Hüseyin Vassaf, Mehmet Hilmi Tokay, Saadettin Kaynak, Colonel Selahaddin Ergür, and Muallim Kazım Bey frequented Tahirağa Camii. The rectangular layout and architectural style of Tahirağa Camii bear a striking resemblance to Ottoman madrasas of the time. It stands as a serene oasis in the heart of Istanbul, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and spiritual significance. The whispers of whirling dervishes may be silent now, but the walls of Tahirağa Camii still hold their stories, waiting to be discovered.
