Considered the rice granary of old Manila. That’s Taguig’s story etched in its very name.

Hello everyone. I am excited to share with you the captivating story of Taguig. This city pulses with a unique blend of history and modernity.

Taguig’s name comes from “taga-giik”. It means “rice threshers” in Tagalog. Imagine the scene centuries ago. The men of this town were skilled at separating grain from stalk after harvest. The Spanish found “taga-giik” difficult to pronounce. So it evolved into “Taguig”.

Before the Spanish arrived Taguig thrived as a Tagalog settlement. Moro and Chinese traders frequented the area. Archaeological finds reveal artifacts from China’s Ming Dynasty. Duck culture was a local specialty.

In 1571 Spanish conquistadors arrived. Taguig became one of the first areas Christianized. It fell under the Province of Tondo then the Province of Maynila. By 1587 Taguig was officially recognized as a separate town.

Juan Basi a local leader participated in a conspiracy against Spanish rule. The revolt failed. Basi faced exile. Taguig then consisted of nine barrios including Bagumbayan and Ususan. Santa Ana served as the town center.

Taguig’s strategic location near the Pasig River was vital. The river connected Manila Bay and Laguna de Bay. Residents cultivated rice and wove cotton cloth. They showed resistance to Spanish and American colonizers.

The father of Andres Bonifacio hailed from Taguig’s Tipas district. The Napindan Lighthouse became a secret meeting spot for revolutionaries. They plotted attacks against the Spanish.

Floods often submerged Taguig. Plans arose to relocate the town center to higher ground. The local people resisted. They did not want to leave their farms and the river.

During the American occupation Taguig natives fought bravely. However American superiority led to their defeat. Taguig became an independent municipality in 1900. It later merged with Pateros and Muntinlupa. Eventually Taguig regained its independent status.

The Americans established Fort William McKinley a military base in Taguig. After Philippine independence the fort became Fort Bonifacio.

Under martial law Taguig housed political prisoners. Detention centers became sites of human rights abuses.

In 1986 President Marcos transferred control of Fort Bonifacio to Makati. Taguig contested this leading to a long territorial dispute. Finally in 2022 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Taguig.

Today Taguig is a highly urbanized city. It is a center for finance and commerce. Bonifacio Global City stands as a testament to its growth.

Taguig showcases the Philippines’ dynamic spirit. Its historical roots and modern ambitions intertwine. This creates a city unlike any other. Taguig continues to evolve. It embraces its heritage while charging towards the future. Thank you for exploring Taguig’s story with me.
