Did you know Taggerty’s name is meant to be an Aboriginal word for “blue clay”? It’s a small town in the Goulburn Valley, a region of rolling hills and forests, with the Cathedral Range towering over it. The town owes its existence to the discovery of gold in a gully off the Acheron River back in 1870. People moved to Taggerty to extract the precious metal from the earth, but gold mining didn’t last long, and folks found themselves living in a place that had potential but not the excitement of the gold rush. Fortunately, the Acheron River provided a livelihood for many residents who turned to dairy farming. Today, you’ll find Taggerty a tranquil town with a general store, a town hall, a caravan park, and a few bed and breakfasts. Even though gold mining is long gone, it’s a reminder of Taggerty’s history and its resilience. Today, it’s a place to relax, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and maybe even catch a trout or two in picturesque Acheron River.
