Whispers of Selma’s legacy echo here. This is the Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church. A place where faith and courage intertwined. A beacon of hope during the Civil Rights Movement.

Formed in 1884 this church served Selma University students faculty and the burgeoning African-American middle class. It wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a center of community and leadership. Four presidents and three general secretaries of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc hailed from Tabernacle Baptist. Think about that. The impact of this single church on a national denomination is astonishing.

Ministers and members actively participated in the fight for equality. Pastor Louis Lloyd Anderson opened Tabernacle’s doors in May 1963. He did so to launch the Voting Rights Movement at the request of Bernard Lafayette Jr and Mrs Amelia Boynton. The church hosted the memorial service for Samuel Boynton a pivotal civil rights activist. It also hosted the movement’s first mass meeting. Two members Reverend John D Hunter and Mrs Marie Foster were among the Courageous Eight. They formed the steering committee for the Dallas County Voters League. They played a critical role in bringing Dr Martin Luther King Jr to Selma in 1964. Dr Sullivan Jackson and his wife even hosted Dr King and his staff in their home. The connection between Tabernacle and the Boynton family continued. Tabernacle held Mrs Amelia Boynton-Robinson’s homegoing service in 2016.

Beyond its role in the Civil Rights Movement Tabernacle stands as an architectural marvel. Its Classical Revival style is stunning. The church was designed by David T West a congregation member. He was an African-American architect who completed the work in 1922. This beautiful building reflects the community’s dedication and faith.

So stand here for a moment. Imagine the weight of history. Imagine the songs of freedom. Imagine the quiet strength of faith that echoed within these walls. The Historic Tabernacle Baptist Church. It’s more than a building. It’s a testament to perseverance and a legacy of hope. It’s a vital part of American history.
