“An old gymnasium transformed into a vibrant cultural hub?” That’s the story of Taastrup Teater og Musikhus.

Taastrup Teater og Musikhus stands before us. It is a testament to community spirit and artistic evolution. Originally, this building was a gymnasium for Selsmoseskolen. It was known as Selsmosescenen.

In 1970 a group of local residents founded Taastrup Teater. Over the years they put on performances under various names. Nine years later, the theater received state support. This marked a turning point for Taastrup Teater.

In 1987, Mogens Holm became the artistic director. The repertoire changed reflecting a new artistic vision. However, Holm departed in 2012. The theater ceased operating as a regional venue. Høje-Taastrup Kommune took over its management. Today, the building functions as an event and culture center.

The name changed in 2016 to Taastrup Teater & Musikhus. This reflected a new initiative incorporating both theater and music. The change brought more music to its programs.

Taastrup Teater & Musikhus also houses the Høje-Taastrup Teaterforening. The Louise Schouw Teater also calls this place home.

In the early 1990s, the Copenhagen County Council provided funding. This allowed for the establishment of offices and a foyer. A few years later, Høje-Taastrup Municipality decided that the rest of the theater needed an upgrade. New dressing rooms, workshops, and a café were created. Kjeld Abells Plads was established in front of the theater in the late 90s.

In 2007, Realdania stepped in with external funding. An extension to the theater opened in 2009. It included a new foyer. The facade slopes away from the existing building. It features translucent and clear acrylic triangles.

When you visit Taastrup Teater & Musikhus you will find that the theater opens one hour before each performance or concert. There is an open cloakroom for each event. For larger events a paid cloakroom is available with staff supervision. The venue is accessible with a wheelchair-friendly entrance. The bar, toilets, and entrance to the hall are on the ground floor. A balcony and a tribune are accessible without an elevator. You’ll find a handicap toilet in the foyer. It is possible to book wheelchair and companion seats. The hall is equipped with a telecoil.

Taastrup Teater & Musikhus is only a 10-minute walk from Taastrup Station. Here you can use the S-train and Movia buses.

Now, as you stand here, imagine the countless performances. Picture the music echoing within these walls. This place started as a simple school gymnasium. It is now a vibrant center for arts and culture. Taastrup Teater & Musikhus continues to enrich the community. It provides a stage for creativity and a space for shared experiences.
