Today we stand before Sz\u0171z M\u00e1ria olt\u00e1r a symbol. It marks centuries of Hungarian history. This Catholic church has seen empires rise and fall. It has witnessed the city transform around it.

Originally built in the 13th century Sz\u0171z M\u00e1ria olt\u00e1r has undergone many renovations. King B\u00e9la IV initiated its grand construction after the Mongol invasion. The church was initially named after the Virgin Mary.

In the 15th century King Matthias Corvinus transformed the church. That is why the Church would be named after him. He expanded it in the Gothic style. He added the Matthias bell tower. It enhanced the church’s Gothic appearance. Sz\u0171z M\u00e1ria olt\u00e1r became a preferred venue for royal weddings.

During the Ottoman Turkish occupation in 1526 the church became a mosque. The Turks removed valuable artifacts. They damaged furnishings. Altars and paintings were concealed. They were hidden behind whitewashed walls.

Christian troops reclaimed Buda in 1686. The church then underwent renovation and reconstruction. Later it was administered by the Jesuit Order. The Jesuits made alterations in the Baroque style. A dormitory and a seminary were constructed.

In the 19th century Frigyes Schulek initiated a Neo-Gothic restoration. He restored the church. He elevated it to a gem in the Buda Castle Hill area.

Sz\u0171z M\u00e1ria olt\u00e1r faced challenges in the 20th century. It sustained damage during World War II. There were multiple renovations. In 1999 the Catholic Church received the church as parish property.

The western facade dates to the 19th century. It features medieval carvings. The southern bell tower displays the Hunyadi family’s coat of arms. The B\u00e9la Tower features Budapest’s oldest medieval stone carving.

Inside the chapels tell individual stories. St. Imre’s Chapel Holy Trinity Chapel and others offer glimpses into different eras. The windows of the south wall depict the lives of holy women. These include the Virgin Mary Saint Margaret and Saint Elizabeth.

The church has a rich musical history. The “King’s Organ” completed in 1909 is the largest organ in Budapest. Flags throughout history were displayed after victorious campaigns.

B\u00e9la III of Hungary and his wife Agnes of Antioch are interred here. They rest in the chapel of the northern nave.
