In 1753, a grateful family, the Nagyőszis, commissioned a master stonemason, Sigl Márton, to build Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna. Their reason? The miraculous survival of their children. This small chapel, nestled on the slopes of Svábhegy, became a testament to their faith and relief. Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna started as a humble 30 square meter structure. Over time, it evolved. In 1970, the chapel and surrounding land were purchased by a priest, Regőczi István. He began renovations, adding a wooden extension. The chapel’s namesake, a graceful statue of the Virgin Mary crowned with silver, watches over the sanctuary. Inside, artistic creations adorn the space, adding layers of beauty to this place of worship. The renovations continued after the change of regime in Hungary. Architect Domonkos Jenő redesigned Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna. His vision transformed it into the striking brick structure we see today, complete with a warm, inviting wooden interior. The rededication took place on December 8, 1991, led by Bishop Katona István. Outside Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna, a cloister wraps around the building. Here, a poignant Stations of the Cross was blessed in 1991. The bronze reliefs, carved from Carrara marble, are the work of sculptor Faykod Zsuzsa. A bust of Cardinal Mindszenty stands at the beginning of this path of reflection. The cloister also holds a wooden cross with a bronze corpus, commemorating 25 years of reconciliation for Hungary. A Lourdes grotto, consecrated in 1995, adds another layer of spiritual significance to Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna. In honor of Hungary’s millennial celebrations and its thousand years of Christianity, a gilded statue by an unknown artist stands proudly. Above it, a replica of the Hungarian Holy Crown rests on three pillars. From the covered well behind Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna, a stone Madonna from Budavár keeps watch. The well’s sides are covered with tiles, each a testament of gratitude from pilgrims who have visited. Within Szűz Mária Királyné Kápolna, daily masses, rosaries, and litanies continue. This small chapel, born from gratitude, continues to offer solace and spiritual nourishment. It stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of hope.
