Gazing upon the Szűz Mária és Szent MIhály Arkangyal Kopt Ortodox templom, can you hear the whispers of history? This unassuming building holds a significant story. It marks a milestone as the first Coptic church in Hungary. The Szűz Mária és Szent MIhály Arkangyal Kopt Ortodox templom stands as a beacon of faith for the Coptic community. Its consecration in 2011 by Pope Shenouda III, the leader of the Coptic Christian community, was a momentous occasion. Hundreds of faithful gathered from across Europe, witnessing the three-hour ceremony alongside five Coptic bishops. The church, dedicated to the Mother of God, the Holy Virgin Mary, and Archangel Michael, resonated with prayers. Pope Shenouda III offered prayers for the sick, travelers, the harvest, the deceased, victims, peace, the congregation, and even the president of Egypt. He then consecrated the three altars, altar cloths, chalices, icons, and paintings within the Szűz Mária és Szent MIhály Arkangyal Kopt Ortodox templom. The three altars hold special significance in Coptic tradition. They are essential for the nine-hour ceremonies, as each altar cannot be reused during the extended services. The main altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The left altar honors Archangel Michael. The right altar is dedicated to Saint Paul and Saint Anthony. The sanctuary, adorned with a mural of Jesus Christ, exudes a sense of reverence. A wall decorated with icons of the apostles separates the sanctuary from the rest of the church. The church’s layout designates separate areas for the clergy, men, and women, reflecting the traditions of the Coptic faith. The church’s priest, Father Yussef Khalil, received a prestigious award from Pope Shenouda III during the consecration. Father Yussef expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the creation of Hungary’s first Coptic church. He prayed for God’s grace to guide his service. Pope Shenouda III himself spoke extensively about his visit to Hungary. He was warmly received by the country’s leaders. The Szűz Mária és Szent MIhály Arkangyal Kopt Ortodox templom also received a gift from the Pope: an icon of the Virgin Mary. Other gifts, including letters and commemorative medals, were bestowed upon members of the church community, past and present representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and government officials. This church is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith, community, and the enduring connection between Hungary and the Coptic Christian world. As you stand before it, remember the journey of faith that led to its creation.
