The Szily-kápolna is also known as the Szent Vendel-kápolna. It is nestled in the Iharos-hegy forest near Biatorbágy. This historical and architectural gem offers a unique glimpse into the past. Built in the early 19th century the chapel is closely linked to the Szily family. They held significant land in Biatorbágy. Szily József a court counselor commissioned its construction on his wife’s family estate. The chapel served a dual purpose. It was both a religious site and the Szily family’s burial chapel.
In 1817 Ferenc Spetykó dedicated the chapel to Saint Vendel. Saint Vendel is the protector of shepherds and animals. The chapel’s history is marked by damage particularly during World War II. Although its original furnishings including an Empire-style altar are gone the chapel retains its original charm.
Architecturally the Szily-kápolna is a prime example of classicist style. Its round layout and elegant facade are crowned with columns. A tympanum adorns the structure. The cupola’s arches and iron-grated oval windows symbolize the connection between earthly and heavenly realms. Inside a crypt served as the final resting place for Szily family members.

Reaching the Szily-kápolna involves a journey. A steep serpentine path from Iharosi út is accessible only on foot. This adds to the chapel’s secluded serene atmosphere. The chapel was renovated by the Biatorbágy Kultúrájáért Alapítvány. They worked with various organizations and local support. It was re-inaugurated on June 6 2009. Father Béla Hutóczky blessed the chapel. Dr. Tamás Mezős gave the inaugural address.
