Szerb Antal Gimnázium

“A school for housewives? In *this* grand building?” you might ask. Indeed, the Szerb Antal Gimnázium, this impressive structure before us, began its life in 1906 quite differently than its current role. The Magyar Gazdaasszonyok Országos Egyesülete (National Association of Hungarian Housewives) envisioned this place as a haven for young women, a training ground for future homemakers. They sought to equip girls from all social classes with the skills to become “moral, careful, and clever housewives”. The Szerb Antal Gimnázium, originally designed as a girls’ orphanage and vocational school, boasted central heating, running water, and could accommodate 150 students. The curriculum included needlework, dressmaking, housekeeping, cooking, weaving, and even music, languages, and dance. Imagine young women diligently practicing their stitches or perfecting a waltz, within these very walls. However, the move to Cinkota from Budapest proved financially challenging. Many fee-paying students couldn’t follow, leaving the building half-empty. A resourceful solution came in 1909, when the Ministry of Religion and Public Education leased part of the building for students relocated from Pozsony (present-day Bratislava). This arrangement allowed the school to continue its mission while ensuring financial stability. The Szerb Antal Gimnázium continued to evolve. In 1919, it formally became the training school from Pozsony. It eventually transitioned fully into a secondary school, offering a diverse curriculum. The school even housed an air raid shelter in its basement during World War II. In 1969, the school adopted the name of renowned Hungarian writer Szerb Antal, solidifying its place in the cultural landscape. Today, the Szerb Antal Gimnázium carries on a legacy of education. Within these historic walls, students pursue a rigorous academic curriculum.
