Picture this: 1688. The Paulines a Hungarian order founded in the 13th century purchased land. This land once held a mosque and humble homes. They envisioned a grand testament to their devotion. A testament we see before us today. The construction began in 1715 with the monastery first then the church itself. The cornerstone was laid in 1725. Master builders Drenker Mayerhoffer and Siegl oversaw the project.
The church was consecrated in 1742 a momentous occasion celebrated by Archbishop Patachich. Imagine the grandeur of that day. The newly built church filled with the devout the air thick with incense and the sound of hymns.
But the story doesn’t end there. The Pauline order was dissolved in 1786 by Joseph II. The Szent Péter és Pál-templom then became the University Church. The main altar depicts Mary’s birth. This shows the church’s dedication. The artist Lipót Conti captured the scene with amazing lifelike detail.
