Envision an animal fighting arena transformed into a house of worship. This is Szent István király-templom. It is Budapest’s largest church. Consecrated to Hungary’s first King, Stephen I, it stands as a testament to faith and history.
Construction of Szent István király-templom began in 1851. It wasn’t completed until 1905. The delay stemmed from the dome’s collapse in 1868. The church had to be rebuilt. Originally planned as a Hellenistic-style church, it evolved into Neo-Renaissance.
There was debate about whom to dedicate the basilica to. Saint Leopold of Austria was the initial choice. But ultimately, it was dedicated to King Stephen I. This reinforced Hungary’s Christian heritage. He reigned from 1001 to 1038. His reign established Christianity in Hungary.
Inside Szent István király-templom, admire the ornate high altar. Intricate mosaics adorn the space. The dome depicts God and St. Stephen. See St. Stephen’s famous right hand. It is symbolic of his incorruptibility. The Holy Right is housed within the church.

The church suffered damage during World War II. A fire broke out during restoration in 1947. The dome burned again. Restoration was funded by public donations.
In 1982, Szent István király-templom was declared unsafe. A storm tore off metal plating from the dome. Restoration began in 1983 and lasted 20 years.
The treasury was moved in 2012. The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament took its place. The Holy Right has been housed here since 1950. The Saint Stephen Bell was installed in 1990. It replaced a bell dismantled by the Nazis.
Szent István király-templom stands 96 meters tall. It can accommodate 8,000 believers. Its inscription reads “I am the way, the truth and the life”. These are the words of Jesus.
Today Szent István király-templom is a significant monument. It is a leading Catholic church in Budapest. It serves as co-cathedral of the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese.
