Picture the scene. It’s December 1944. The biting wind whips across Szent Istvan-hegy. This isn’t just any hill. It’s a strategic point a pivotal location in the brutal battles for Budapest. Szent Istvan-hegy stands sentinel overlooking the chaos.

Szent Istvan-hegy though called a mountain is really just a hill. Its highest point reaches approximately 252 meters. The northern slope connects to Kukukkhegy already heavily built up. To the south lies the Csomor area bordering the battle lines. An abandoned sand quarry sits silently nearby a stark reminder of the area’s past.

The Second World War had reached its fever pitch. The front lines snaked through Mogyorod Csomor and Kerepes. Hungarian and German troops defended against the relentless Soviet advance. Units of the Hungarian Royal 10th Infantry Division fought fiercely. They were supported by smaller detachments. These included the 4th Hussar Regiment and elements of German units. Opposing them were three Soviet rifle divisions part of the 30th Rifle Corps.

The fighting on Szent Istvan-hegy was intense. On December 21st and 22nd fierce Russian attacks pounded the positions. The 4th Hussar Regiment played a crucial role. Their commander Colonel Pal Kokay coordinated actions. On December 26th a major Soviet offensive began. Soviet tanks broke through. They reached the 201-meter high point capturing Sikator-puszta. They advanced to within 800 meters of the trenches on Szent Istvan-hegy.

The diary of Ferenc Szokolay a Hussar officer vividly recounts these days. He described intense fighting exhaustion and constant fear. His unit was understaffed and facing overwhelming odds. He noted the constant shelling the struggle to maintain lines and the despair of his men. Szokolay’s journal gives us a glimpse into the sheer brutality of this conflict. The fighting on Szent Istvan-hegy demonstrates the horrific cost of war.

Imagine the soldiers huddled in trenches the earth trembling from explosions. The air thick with smoke and the screams of men. This small hill was a scene of immense courage and sacrifice. Szent Istvan-hegy witnessed the clash between determined defenders and a powerful enemy. The battles raged on. The fight for Budapest was far from over. But on Szent Istvan-hegy the struggle was truly emblematic of the entire conflict. It was a testament to human resilience and the horrors of war. The abandoned sand quarry stands as a poignant reminder of this brutal chapter in history. Remember this as you leave Szent Istvan-hegy today.
