“A garden suburb?” you might ask, pausing at the edge of Szent Imre kertváros. “In the heart of bustling Budapest?” Indeed. Szent Imre kertváros is a unique pocket of tranquility within Hungary’s vibrant capital. Its story begins not with grand palaces or ancient fortifications, but with the quiet dreams of displaced civil servants seeking a peaceful haven. Following the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, many Hungarian civil servants found themselves uprooted from their homes in territories ceded to neighboring countries. They arrived in Pestszentlőrinc, a district of Budapest, seeking a new beginning. In 1925, they formed the Pestszentlőrinci Kertotthon Housing, Production, Consumption, and Sales Cooperative. Their vision? A garden city, a place where families could thrive amidst green spaces and a strong sense of community. By 1932, Szent Imre kertváros, this “garden city” dream, began to take root. The name likely reflects the 1930 memorial year of Saint Emeric of Hungary, a fitting tribute to a prince known for his piety and devotion. The neighborhood’s boundaries, established early on, are still recognizable today. They run from Üllői út along the Körös utca industrial area to Béke tér, then follow Királyhágó utca, Flór Ferenc utca, and back to Üllői út along the Körös utca industrial area. Szent Imre kertváros offers a glimpse into a specific moment in Budapest’s history, a testament to the resilience and community spirit of those who built it. It’s a reminder that even within a bustling metropolis, pockets of tranquility and shared dreams can flourish.
