Whispers of devotion echo through time. This is the Szent Imre imádkozda. Its story is one of faith resilience and a community’s enduring spirit.

The Szent Imre imádkozda a Roman Catholic church stands as a testament to the devotion of Pestszentimre’s residents. It’s a place of worship a beacon of hope. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Saint Emeric Memorial Year of 1930-1931. This event spurred the renaming of the settlement from Soroksárpéteri to Pestszentimre. The name change honored Saint Emeric patron saint of youth. His purity symbolized the new village’s aspirations.

The church itself a three-aisled Neo-Gothic structure began construction in 1926. Bánszky Mihály designed it. By 1928 the structure was complete. The first Mass was celebrated under the newly built roof. However funds remained scarce. The construction continued for another decade.

The completed but unfinished Szent Imre imádkozda was tragically destroyed in 1944. A Hungarian sapper corps blew it up. This prevented the Russian army from using its tower as an observation point. The destruction was a devastating blow to the community.

Yet the spirit of Pestszentimre remained unbroken. The Szent Imre imádkozda’s reconstruction began in 1955 and lasted until 1959. The tower’s restoration followed from 1961 to 1962. Finally in 1968 the church was consecrated again. Its present form including its spire came in 1990. A statue of Saint Emeric crafted by Géza Hiesz adorns the main altar. Another wooden statue by Otto Frech stands in the church garden.

The Szent Imre imádkozda’s story is far more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of faith resilience and a community’s unyielding spirit. It’s a place where devotion echoes through time. A tangible connection to the past. A testament to a community that rebuilt its faith brick by brick.
