Built between 1930 and 1931 the Szent Család templom stands proudly in Budapest’s 6th district. Its neo-eclectic style is a testament to a time of significant growth in the city’s population. The need for this church arose because Budapest’s population increased substantially between the two World Wars. The Szent Család templom wasn’t just a new building. On November 15 1931 Bishop István Breyer consecrated the new church. It was a joyous occasion. A celebration of community and faith. Sadly this joy was short-lived. On January 1 1945 during World War II a devastating bomb attack severely damaged the Szent Család templom. The entire interior was destroyed. Altarpieces the organ pews and lighting fixtures were all lost. Yet amidst the devastation some things survived. A crucifix and a statue of Saint Therese remained unscathed. They stood as silent witnesses to the horrors of war and the enduring power of faith.
The reconstruction and restoration of the Szent Család templom was a long and arduous process. The cost of restoring the main altar and marble flooring in 1955 was covered by Zoltán Kodály a renowned composer who frequently attended services there. Throughout the 1970s insulation work was carried out. A columbarium was added to the basement and courtyard in 1996. By 2000 the church was fully restored. Two new bells were installed in 2002 and the organ was restored in 2006. The Szent Család templom stands today a testament to resilience and the unwavering faith of its community. It has been a source of solace and hope through many difficult times.
