A humble chapel yet a beacon of faith. That’s the Szent Anna-kápolna for you. Nestled on Szent Anna-rét it stands as a testament to perseverance. This small chapel wasn’t always here. In fact a previous chapel existed on this very spot. It was built in the 19th century. Sadly a workers’ uprising destroyed it completely in 1952. The Szent Anna-kápolna we see today is a newer structure. It was built after the regime change in 1992. The family of András Salamin spearheaded this reconstruction.

The Szent Anna-kápolna’s history goes even further back. In the early 20th century plans were in motion. A larger church was envisioned. It was to be a place of prayer for peace. Then in the 1940s Sister Natália had visions. Her visions included a chapel on Szent Anna-rét. Construction even began in 1944. The Soviet invasion and subsequent communist rule halted this project. The dream remained unrealized.

For years the site lay dormant. Until finally in 2018 the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese acted. They launched a design competition. The plan was initially to fund it through government grants. However economic challenges arose due to the war in Ukraine. The funds weren’t secured. Undeterred the faithful stepped up. They donated their money. The Szent Anna-kápolna was finally built through their collective generosity.

The architects Márkus Péter and Koczka Kristóf designed the chapel. It is small yet incredibly beautiful. In its closed state it can accommodate around 20 people. Open however the western side can hold 50 to 100 people. Open the eastern side and you can even host large groups of pilgrims. Thousands could attend a mass here if needed.

The Szent Anna-kápolna is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of hope and resilience. It represents the unwavering faith of a community. A community that refused to let their dream die. The chapel serves as a reminder of a past struggle. It is also a powerful symbol for peace and reconciliation in a turbulent world.
