Why a deer? This is the question many ask when they first encounter the Szarvas szobor. The Szarvas szobor isn’t just a statue. It’s a silent whisper of a bygone era, a bronze poem nestled in the heart of Szarvas. The Szarvas szobor was commissioned in 1913 by Count Pál Bolza. He intended it as a surprise birthday gift for his wife. The creation of the statue was shrouded in secrecy. The count worked closely with the renowned artist Géza Maróti. Maróti was a sculptor, architect, and industrial artist. He toiled through the night, his chisel dancing over the bronze. He wanted to unveil the magnificent deer on his wife’s special day. Originally, the Szarvas szobor graced the gardens of the Bolza family’s Körös-parti mansion. It remained there, a symbol of love and artistry, until 1950. Then, by decree of the town council, the Szarvas szobor was moved to a more prominent location in the city center. There were discussions during the regime change of returning the statue to its original location. However, the count’s daughter, Mariette Bolza, expressed her contentment with the statue’s new home. She believed it stood in a place worthy of its beauty and significance. So, the Szarvas szobor remains, a testament to a love story, artistic brilliance, and the passage of time.
