Hidden within the Budakalász hills lies the Szabó József-barlang. This isn’t just any cave. It’s a treasure trove of geological history waiting to be uncovered. Discovered in 1963 during sandstone mining the Szabó József-barlang first revealed itself to the world. A quarry worker Kollár József alerted the Szabó József Geological Technical School about this incredible find. Their exploration began in 1965. The school’s researchers even sealed a section off with an iron gate transported from the nearby Solymár-őrdőglyuk.
The Szabó József-barlang isn’t a massive cavern. It measures just 152 meters long 15.8 meters deep and 2.5 meters high. Yet its relatively small size belies its rich history and scientific significance. It’s a horizontally oriented cave. It formed at the intersection of two fissures. This suggests a unique geological process. The cave’s structure is quite distinctive. It’s divided into two main parts. The upper section carved into Hárshegy sandstone. The lower part formed in Dachstein limestone.

Researchers such as Szablyár Péter conducted surveys creating detailed maps and cross sections. Kordos László focused on the analysis of sediment distribution. Others studied water content and calcium carbonate levels in the rocks. In 1976 it was officially designated a cave of national significance within the Duna-Ipoly National Park. The cave’s name honors Szabó József. It’s also found in literature as Szabó József Cave. This emphasizes its lasting presence in the annals of Hungarian geology.
Though it’s not permanently closed access is regulated by the Duna-Ipoly National Park Authority. This ensures that its unique features are preserved for future generations.
