Founded over 30 years ago the Szabad Evangelikus Gyülekezet stands before you. Its existence began with a simple goal: the free practice of faith. The name itself Szabad Evangelikus Gyülekezet means Free Evangelical Congregation. This speaks volumes about its history. It highlights the congregation’s independence from state or church control. This independence is deeply rooted in its past. Understanding this history requires a journey back in time.
In 1954 a group broke away from the Becsi kapu teri evangelical congregation. They sought a faith that adhered to the spirit of the Gospel. This was a faith free from external influence. Led by Ferenc Sreter an evangelical pastor this group laid the foundation for the Szabad Evangelikus Gyülekezet. For decades the congregation lacked official recognition. They found temporary homes first with the O utcai Testvergyülekezet. Later they gathered at the Methodist Church on Felsőerdősor street.
Finally in 1989 the long-awaited state recognition arrived. The Evangelikus Szabad Eklézsia was formed. It later became the present-day Szabad Evangelikus Gyülekezet in 1990. This community continued to grow. On March 9 1999 Budapest’s District Office officially registered the Szabad Evangelikus Egyház. The congregation was given the registration number 139.
However a later legal challenge in 2012 resulted in the congregation’s status changing. The Szabad Evangelikus Egyház was no longer recognized as a church. It was forced to become a religious association. Despite these obstacles the Szabad Evangelikus Gyülekezet persevered. The leadership team and many dedicated members continue its mission. They strive to create a spiritual home for people of all walks of life. They aim to unite hearts and minds in praise and service of God.
