Hidden within San Francisco’s vibrant SoMa district, the Systems Mural sprawls across a massive wall. The Systems Mural isn’t just another piece of street art. It’s a colossal 600-foot-wide hieroglyphic puzzle, the largest mural in San Francisco. Completed in September 2011, the Systems Mural was no overnight project. It took three years of planning and $55,000 in funding from Intersection for the Arts to bring Brian Barneclo’s vision to life. Two weeks of painting transformed the wall into a visual representation of interconnectedness. The Systems Mural explores the scientific process of “systems thinking”. This concept delves into how individual elements interact and influence each other within a larger, interconnected whole. The mural draws inspiration from the writings of renowned intellectuals such as Alan Watts, Carl Jung, and Bruce Lipton. Their ideas about systems, consciousness, and the interconnected nature of reality are woven into the mural’s intricate design. Barneclo, assisted by R.B. Morris III, created a visual tapestry that invites viewers to contemplate these complex concepts. The Systems Mural is located on the Crescent Cove Apartments building at Seventh and Townsend Streets.
