Whispers of ancient prayers echo within these walls. The Great Synagogue of Copenhagen stands as a testament to centuries of Jewish life in Denmark. It’s a beacon of faith, a place of gathering, and a survivor of turbulent times. The Great Synagogue, completed in 1833, replaced an earlier structure lost to fire. Designed by Gustav Friedrich Hetsch, its exterior embodies Neoclassical simplicity. Twelve pillars grace the facade facing Krystalgade, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The facade sits back from the street, a subtle nod to regulations of the time. Above the gate, an inscription reads, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of God,” welcoming all who enter. But step inside, and you’re transported to a different world. The interior of the Great Synagogue is a stunning blend of Egyptian Revival and Danish design elements, a unique fusion rarely seen in synagogues of this period. The Egyptian motifs in the columns, ceiling, and cornice over the ark create an ambiance both Eastern and European. This sanctuary has witnessed moments of both joy and sorrow. During World War II, the Torah scrolls were hidden in the Trinitatis Church, a testament to interfaith solidarity in times of danger, returning safely after the war. The Great Synagogue also faced darker moments. In 1985, a bomb planted by Palestinian terrorists rocked the building, thankfully causing no injuries. Another attack, a shooting in 2015, tragically took the life of a community member guarding the synagogue. These events underscore the resilience and enduring spirit of the community that calls this place home. The Great Synagogue is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to the rich history of Jewish life in Copenhagen. A place where generations have gathered to pray, celebrate, and find solace. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, inviting you to explore its unique story.
