Isn’t it remarkable how art can transform a space into a vibrant spectacle like the Symbiotes Mural? This mural is a testament to Filipino artistry. It echoes the grand historical narratives of Carlos “Botong” Francisco.

Botong Francisco a National Artist is renowned for his large-scale murals. He captured the essence of Filipino history and culture. His famous work “Filipino Struggles Through History” is a prime example of his artistic vision. Manila Mayor Villegas commissioned it in 1964. Francisco completed the seven panels shortly before his death in 1969.

“Filipino Struggles Through History” is celebrated for its flowing style and vivid colors. It presents an artistic interpretation of Philippine history, customs, and traditions. The mural was initially displayed at the Bulwagang Katipunan in Manila City Hall in 1968. This hall was later named Bulwagang Gat Antonio Villegas. In 1996 it was declared a National Cultural Treasure. It showcases 600 years of Philippine history.

The mural consists of seven oil on canvas paintings. They stretch 80 meters long. Together they depict ten pivotal events in Philippine history. Initially, it was titled “Kasaysayan ng Maynila” meaning History of Manila.

The first panel illustrates the trade between Chinese merchants and Arab traders. It also shows the Datu of Maynilad. This panel extends to the arrival of the Spanish who introduced Christianity. The mural then portrays Rajah Sulayman facing Spanish colonization. It depicts the cross representing conquest and the sword symbolizing Spanish oppression.

The story continues with the Spanish Galleon trade. The Lady of Peace and Good Voyage guides the ships sailing from Manila to Acapulco. The mural also highlights Francisco Balagtas. The characters Florante and Laura are depicted.

Another significant part is the execution of GomBurZa. It portrays the struggles of Filipinos under Spanish rule. Jose Rizal is shown writing “Noli Me Tangere”. The painting progresses to the revolution. Andres Bonifacio leads the Katipuneros.

The mural includes the Treaty of Paris in 1898. It shows Americans entering the scene. Later Manuel Quezon and Manuel Roxas are seen during the Commonwealth inauguration in 1935. Finally it shows the Japanese invasion of 1942.

In 2014 “Filipino Struggles Through History” was moved to the National Museum. It underwent extensive restoration. In 2017 Mayor Joseph Estrada agreed with the National Museum to keep the paintings there. This allows more people to appreciate this National Treasure. Replicas replaced the originals at Manila City Hall.

In 2019 Lito Atienza expressed his dismay. A tarpaulin had replaced the painting at Manila City Hall. Isko Moreno Domagoso supported the return of the murals.

Carlos “Botong” Francisco helped steer Philippine art toward modernism. His art features bold colors and dynamic lines. His inspiration came from his hometown of Angono. The “Filipino Struggles in History” mural is a masterpiece of Filipino heritage. The Symbiotes Mural stands as a modern echo of Francisco’s grand vision. It connects us to the rich tapestry of Filipino art and history.
