Who would have guessed that this magnificent structure began as a simple idea? Masjid Agung Al-Azhar stands before you a testament to faith and perseverance. It wasn’t always this grand. This mosque in Kebayoran Baru began its journey in 1953. Fourteen individuals from the Masyumi Party spearheaded its creation. They envisioned more than just a place of worship. They dreamed of a center for Islamic learning and community. The foundation was laid on November 19 1953.

Initially named Masjid Agung Kebayoran Baru it quickly outgrew its name. The mosque’s design is a fascinating blend. It incorporates elements of Saudi Arabian and Egyptian Qibtiyah mosques. Friedrich Silaban a Christian architect masterfully combined these influences. The result is truly breathtaking. Look up at the stunning dome. Notice the intricate calligraphy adorning the interior. The 99 Asmaul Husna the 99 names of Allah are beautifully displayed.

The mosque’s construction took five years. It was completed in 1958 and inaugurated by President Soekarno in April 1959. But its true story extends beyond bricks and mortar. The mosque became a beacon of Islamic revival. It was the largest mosque in Jakarta until the Istiqlal Mosque was completed in 1978. It played a pivotal role in Indonesia’s political and social landscape. Buya Hamka a prominent religious and political figure served as its first Grand Imam. He played a crucial role in establishing the mosque as a center for Islamic learning.

In 1960 a visit by Professor Mahmoud Syaltout rector of Al-Azhar University in Egypt changed everything. He suggested renaming the mosque Masjid Agung Al-Azhar. The name change reflected the mosque’s growing influence and aspiration. Today Masjid Agung Al-Azhar is more than just a mosque. It is a vibrant hub. It houses schools universities and various community programs. It reflects the multifaceted nature of Islam. It acts as a unifying force within the community.

On August 19 1993 the government recognized its historical significance. Masjid Agung Al-Azhar was officially designated a Jakarta heritage site and a national cultural heritage site. As you stand here you are not just looking at a building. You are witnessing a living legacy. A story of faith community and cultural preservation. A story of Masjid Agung Al-Azhar.
