Ever heard of a town named after a grumpy logger? That’s Swanson for you. Nestled in West Auckland this unassuming suburb holds a rich history. It began as a small settlement in the 1850s. Pioneer William Swanson himself logged kauri trees here. He later became a vocal critic of the destructive logging practices.

Swanson’s story is interwoven with the kauri. The railway arrived in 1881. This transformed Swanson into a bustling hub for loggers and kauri gum diggers. Croatian immigrants joined the gumdigging efforts. Their systematic approach made them stand out.

Imagine picnickers flocking to Redwood Park. This was a popular spot for Aucklanders. New Year’s Day 1900 saw a massive 1500 to 2000 people picnicking. Redwood Park became an army training camp during World War II. Later it hosted Redwood 70. This was New Zealand’s first modern music festival in 1970. Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees headlined.

But Swanson is more than just a historical relic. It’s a vibrant community. The Swanson School opened in 1888. It served as a community center for decades. Religious services concerts and meetings all took place here. A town hall followed in 1929. This hosted dances and film screenings.

The Waitakere Dam project further shaped Swanson’s character. The town provided much of the labor. A tramline linked the dam site to the railway station. Swanson’s growth continued. The population boomed from 500 in the 1920s to nearly 2000 by the 1980s.

A landfill opened in 1984. This created issues with windblown rubbish and methane. The Swanson Balefill Action Group formed. They successfully lobbied for the landfill’s closure in 1996. Today a thriving community remains. It is a testament to Swanson’s resilience and spirit. The Crystal Mountain Mine Museum adds a unique touch. It’s a fascinating reminder of the area’s past. So next time you hear the name Swanson remember it’s far more than just a name on a map.
