Beneath the wide Auckland sky, lies Swanson Cemetery. It’s a place of quiet contemplation. A place where stories whisper from the stones. Swanson Cemetery opened its gates in 1898. It was initially managed by a Board of Trustees. But in the early 1920s, things changed. Due to issues with management and record-keeping, the responsibility shifted. The Waitemata County Council took over, later becoming the Waitemata City Council. And with the 2010 formation of the Auckland super city, the administration landed with the Auckland City Council. The oldest recorded death at Swanson Cemetery dates back to December 20, 1897. It belongs to a man named James Smith. The cemetery remains active to this day. If you’re interested in exploring the history held within these grounds, the Auckland Council provides online burial and cremation records. While extensive, the database is not yet complete. The council is working diligently to transcribe old records. Occasional typographical errors might occur. And due to the early record-keeping challenges, some records might not appear until the headstones themselves are surveyed. So, as you wander through Swanson Cemetery, consider the stories held within its boundaries. From the earliest burial to the most recent, each stone marks a life lived, a story whispered on the wind.
