Considering a day trip to a town once called the “Manchester United of Chav Town”? Swanley might surprise you. Swanley is a town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent. It is located 16 miles southeast of central London.

Let’s step back in time. In 1066, Swanley was just a few cattle farms amidst oak, sycamore, and ash woodland. It wasn’t even mentioned in the Domesday Book. Some say the name comes from the Saxon term “Swine-ley” meaning a clearing for pigs. Imagine a Saxon pig farm slowly transforming into the town we see today.

The railway’s arrival in 1861 dramatically changed Swanley. The town became Swanley Junction. Later, it became Swanley. The original Swanley became Swanley Village in the 1920s.

Swanley Horticultural College opened in 1887 due to the railway. Initially, only male students were admitted. However, in the early 1890s, female students joined. Nurseries and florists bloomed. Some Swanley gardens still boast apple and pear trees from old orchards.

Interestingly, Swanley wasn’t a major flower-growing area. It became attractive to London doctors seeking a cure for sick Londoners escaping the city’s smog.

Three hospitals emerged. Kettlewell Hospital opened in 1885. Parkwood Hospital followed in 1893. White Oak Hospital appeared in 1897. Kettlewell, now Asda’s car park, served poor London patients needing recovery after surgery. Parkwood had a similar purpose. White Oak initially treated children with eye diseases. During World Wars I and II, Kettlewell and Parkwood became military hospitals.

After the National Health Service’s creation in 1948, these hospitals became redundant. Kettlewell and White Oak closed in 1959. Parkwood became Parkwood Hall School in the early 1960s. Today, you can still see White Oak’s gates opposite Swanley Police Station.

Swanley Park is a gem covering 60 acres. Once New Barn Farm, the Town Council bought fields and orchards to protect the green belt. The park features fruit trees, play areas, a cafe, a water park, and a boating lake. Volunteers manage allotments and an environment area. Swanley Athletics Club calls the park home. The park attracts 400,000 visitors annually.

Swanley has been twinned with Verrières-le-Buisson in France and Fastiv in Ukraine.

So, Swanley might have a quirky reputation. It offers a blend of history, green spaces and community spirit.
