Craving the freshest seafood San Francisco has to offer? You’ve arrived at Swan Oyster Depot. This isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a culinary landmark. Swan Oyster Depot has been serving up seafood since 1903. Only a brief break followed the 1906 earthquake.

The Lausten family, Danish immigrants, originally founded Swan Oyster Depot. It started as Cable Oyster Depot. They sold shellfish from Fisherman’s Wharf. After the 1906 earthquake, the Laustens helped the community. They distributed wheat in Golden Gate Park. People used it to make bread. By 1912, they rebuilt and renamed it Swan Oyster Depot. The swan is Denmark’s national bird, so it was chosen for good luck.

In 1946, Sal Sancimino and Pat La Rocca bought Swan Oyster Depot. Sal and his wife Rose worked there daily. Their six sons helped over the years. Sal expanded the menu to include Pacific coast fish. He insisted on fresh, seasonal seafood.

The long Italian marble counter and 18 wooden stools have been there since 1912. They create a unique and intimate dining experience. The restaurant is small, with limited seating. Expect a line, but it moves steadily.

Swan Oyster Depot has earned international acclaim. Critics praise its fresh seafood and simple preparations. It feels like a journey back in time. The Sancimino family’s knowledge of seafood adds to the charm. The menu has remained largely unchanged. This consistency has earned it many awards.

CNN named Swan Oyster Depot one of “America’s Best Historic Restaurants.” Chef Andrew Knowlton calls it his “favorite restaurant in America”. Traci Des Jardins loves it for cracked crab and oysters. James Beard was a regular diner here.

Swan Oyster Depot won a James Beard Award in 2000. It was a semi-finalist several times. The lines are long, but food lovers say it’s worth the wait.

The Sancimino brothers came from Sicily in the 1880s. They fished off Fisherman’s Wharf. Vincent met Maria in Golden Gate Park. She was serving soup to earthquake refugees. They married and had a large family. Their son Salvatore bought Swan Oyster Depot.

The walls are covered with memorabilia. A handwritten menu from 1985 still hangs. It features swans in the corners. Swan Oyster Depot offers a daily selection of fresh oysters. Olympias were popular during the Gold Rush.

A “secret menu” exists. Regulars request items like Smørrebrød. Also popular is the “Dozen Eggs.” These are raw scallops with Sriracha in ponzu sauce. Another favorite is Sicilian Sashimi.

Celebrities often visit Swan Oyster Depot. Bing Crosby and Francis Ford Coppola dined here. James Beard and Anthony Bourdain were regulars. Bourdain called Swan his “true love.” After his death, people gathered here to remember him.

Families have been coming to Swan Oyster Depot for generations. The staff knows many customers by name. The clam chowder, crab salad, and shrimp cocktail are popular. Don’t miss the homemade horseradish.
