Built in 1872 the Svjetionik Otočić Daksa lighthouse stands tall. It guards the northern side of Daksa Island. This small island is part of the Elaphiti archipelago. It sits near Dubrovnik’s Gruž harbor. The lighthouse’s beam cuts through the Adriatic night. It guides ships safely into port.

For centuries Daksa Island held a different light. A Franciscan monastery once thrived there. It welcomed religious figures from across Europe. They sought peace and solitude. The monastery was built in 1281 by Sabo Getaldić. The monks lived there until Napoleon’s army arrived in 1806. Today only ruins remain. After the Napoleonic era the island changed hands. Polish Prince Aleksander Poniński bought Daksa. He replanted the ravaged land with pines laurels and citrus trees. He even restored the monastery. He filled it with a library of over 4000 books and 200 manuscripts. Sadly war interrupted this restoration. The island’s peaceful past was overshadowed by tragedy.

The lighthouse though continues its silent watch. It stands as a beacon of hope and safety. It’s a stark contrast to the island’s darker history.
