Hidden within Dubrovnik’s maze of streets lies Sveti Vid, a small, privately owned church. Sveti Vid is a hidden gem, tucked away in the heart of the city. It observes a unique tradition. Holy Mass is celebrated only once a year, on the feast day of Saint Vid. This annual event draws the community together. It reinforces their connection to their shared heritage. The church’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Family papers, however, mention Ecclesia S.ti Viti intra murum as early as 1430. The church was in ruins after the earthquake of 1667. It was later restored and consecrated in 1806. In 1932, the family of Milo and Mile Katić renovated Sveti Vid. A stone inscription on the right side of the church commemorates their contribution. Today, the descendants of Milo and Mile Katić maintain and cherish Sveti Vid. The key holder is Maruška Gozze Gučetić, a 97-year-old resident of Dubrovnik. She safeguards this sacred space, ensuring the continuation of its unique tradition.
