Ever wondered what a Swedish church is doing in Copenhagen? This is Svenska Gustafskyrkan. It stands as a testament to the close ties between Denmark and Sweden.

Svenska Gustafskyrkan is more than just a church. It’s a vibrant hub for the Swedish community in Copenhagen. It is located at Folke Bernadottes Allé 4.

In the early 1900s, many Swedes lived in and around Copenhagen. Pastor Nils Widner was sent to minister to Swedish sailors. His work soon expanded to include all Swedes in the area. Services were first held elsewhere. The community needed a dedicated space.

The Swedish Church Society was formed in 1903. Its goal was to build a Swedish church in Copenhagen. Swedes in Copenhagen donated 10 øre per week. This financed the church’s construction. Theodor Wåhlin, a Swedish architect, designed it.

The Danish state provided a site for Svenska Gustafskyrkan. It was located on the bank of the moat surrounding Kastellet. This mirrored St. Alban’s English Church. The foundation stone was laid in 1908. Swedish and Danish royals attended the ceremony. Svenska Gustafskyrkan was consecrated in 1911.

Gotfred Tvede, a Danish architect, supervised the construction. He was assisted by Hans Alfred Jørgen Jørgensen. This collaboration highlights the friendship between the two nations.

Svenska Gustafskyrkan showcases Jugendstil architecture. It’s built with hard-burnt brownish brick. The complex includes church halls and a community center. Offices, a rectory, and archives are also present. A relief by Henrik Starcke adorns the exterior wall.

Inside Svenska Gustafskyrkan, the organ has 31 steps. It was installed in 1947. Niels Hansen created the pulpit in Copenhagen. The black granite altar features the christogram IHS. This is interpreted as “Jesus, Savior of man.”

Svenska Gustafskyrkan continues to host services. It also organizes music events. Activities for children and young people are common. The church remains a vital part of Swedish culture in Copenhagen. It embodies the spirit of cooperation and friendship. This is between Sweden and Denmark.
