Deep in Kent, lies Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley a civil parish. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner. Are you ready to explore its story?

Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley sits in the Borough of Dartford. It is located west of the River Darent. The M25 motorway separates the two settlements.

Once, Sutton-at-Hone was the heart of a half-lathe. It was a huge area for administering Kent. This half-lathe included Dartford and Hawley. Imagine that for a moment.

In 1894, the Parish Council of Sutton-at-Hone formed. Its area covered much more than today. It included Swanley Junction, Swanley Village, Hextable and Crockenhill. That is quite a large area.

Parish boundaries changed a lot in 1955. The Parish shrank to just Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley. In the late 1970s, the parish got its full name. It became Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley Parish Council.

One of the jewels of Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley is St John’s Jerusalem. This was once a Commandery of the Knights Hospitallers. They belonged to the Order of St John of Jerusalem.

Richard I gave the manor to the Knights Hospitallers. That was way back in time.

Now, the National Trust owns St John’s Jerusalem. You can visit its garden and 13th-century chapel. They are open to the public. A visit is like stepping back in time.

Sutton-at-Hone itself has ancient roots. The Domesday Book of 1086 mentions it as “Sudtone”. By 1281, it was called “Suttone atte hone”.

The name means “southern town near a stone”. This probably refers to a boundary stone. The Old English word “hān” means stone.

A church existed in Sutton-at-Hone by 1077. It was dedicated to St John the Baptist. It was rebuilt in the 14th century. A fire in 1615 led to more rebuilding. Legend says a gun fired at a bird caused it.

Sutton Athletic F.C. calls Sutton-at-Hone home. They play in the Southern Counties East Football League. You can catch a game at The London Hire Stadium.

In 1962, renumbering caused a stir. Mrs Pemberton-Piggott complained about the new address for St John’s Jerusalem. It was to be 79 Main Road. She saw it as creeping suburbanisation.

Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley offers a glimpse into England’s past. From knights to renumbering controversies, its story is rich. As we conclude our visit to Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley, remember that beneath the surface of this civil parish lies a tapestry of historical events and cultural shifts.
