Can a school building have a soul? Sutherland Elementary School seems to. It breathes history and community spirit. Here at 10015 S. Leavitt Street, Sutherland Elementary stands as a testament to a remarkable woman and a dedicated community. The school, established in 1925, honors Elizabeth “Bessie” Huntington Sutherland, Cook County’s first female principal. Sutherland, a progressive educator, believed in hands-on learning and community engagement. She shaped the educational landscape of Chicago’s south side in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially, portable classrooms stood on this very spot, serving the burgeoning Beverly neighborhood. After Sutherland’s death in 1924, this permanent structure arose, a brick-and-mortar embodiment of her legacy. Sutherland Elementary School isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, etched into its very foundation. In 2013, a forgotten scrapbook surfaced, revealing the school’s early struggles. Faulty construction threatened the building’s integrity. Parents rallied, demanding repairs and ensuring the safety of their children. This echoes Bessie Sutherland’s own dedication. The scrapbook also tells of parents supporting teachers during the Great Depression, further demonstrating the strength of the Sutherland community. Today, Sutherland Elementary School continues to thrive. It embraces the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program and boasts a Level 1+ rating. The “Bulldogs” compete in various sports, and the annual “I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival” transforms the school grounds into a vibrant canvas. From its namesake to its students, past and present, Sutherland Elementary School embodies the spirit of community, resilience, and a passion for education. It’s a place where history whispers from the walls and the future unfolds in the classrooms.
