High on the slopes of Mont-Valérien stands Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial. A panoramic view of Paris unfolds before you. This is not just a cemetery. It’s a poignant tribute. It’s a story etched in stone and bronze.

Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial is more than just rows of graves. It’s a place of remembrance. It’s a place where history whispers. It’s a sanctuary for those who gave their lives in World War I and World War II. The 7.5-acre site holds the remains of over 1500 American soldiers. Many died far from home. Their sacrifice is honored here.

Originally designed in 1922 by Jacques Gréber it was initially for World War I casualties. It later expanded. Now it includes those who perished in World War II. Within the memorial chapel are bronze tablets. They bear the names of 974 missing soldiers from World War I. Small rosettes mark the names of those later found and identified. The chapel itself is magnificent. It was enlarged with loggias dedicated to the fallen of both wars. White marble figures stand in the loggias’ ends. They symbolize the immense loss. Inscriptions on the loggia walls list the American military casualties. The inscriptions also cite locations of overseas cemeteries. There is no single monument to all the fallen. Each grave tells its own story of sacrifice and loss.

Among those buried here lie Inez Crittenden. She was a leader of the Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators Unit. Also buried here is Willard Dickerman Straight. He was a diplomat an investment banker a publisher and a major in the US Army. Their stories are only two. There are hundreds more lives recorded in this hallowed ground. Each story represents a piece of American history. Each represents a life cut short by war.

As you walk through Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial. Take time to pause. Reflect on the lives of those who rest here. The cemetery offers a poignant reminder. It reminds us of the price of freedom. It reminds us of the enduring spirit of those who fought for it. This is not just a memorial to the dead.
