Could a school motto truly shape generations? At Surbiton High School, nestled in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, the motto “Amor Nos Semper Ducat” (May Love Always Lead Us) has done just that. Surbiton High School began its journey in 1884, founded by Anglican clergymen with a vision for superior girls’ education grounded in Church of England principles. The school’s initial motto, “Be good, sweet maid, and let who will be clever,” reflected a different era. But Surbiton High School quickly evolved, embracing innovation and academic rigor. Miss Mary Amelia Bennett, one of the first women to graduate from Girton College, Cambridge, led the charge as the first headmistress. The curriculum expanded rapidly, offering everything from instrumental music to watercolors. The school fostered a close relationship with local churches like St Andrew’s and St Mark’s, a tradition that continues today. Under Miss Nixon Smith, the second headmistress, Surbiton High School pioneered modern teaching methods in music and mathematics. A spirit of giving also took root, with students contributing weekly pennies to charities like the Universities Mission to Central Africa. That charitable spirit thrives today, with Surbiton High School supporting over 15 charities and raising around £50,000 annually. From its humble beginnings with 11 pupils in a house on Surbiton Crescent, the school now boasts seven sites, including a Boys’ Preparatory School, a Girls’ Preparatory School, a Senior School, and a Sixth Form Centre. Surbiton High School’s commitment to excellence is evident in its academic results. In 2024, 46% of GCSE grades were the highest level 9, and over 91% were grade 7 or above. At A-level, 62% of grades were A* to A, with many students heading to top universities. Beyond academics, Surbiton High School is a sporting powerhouse, known for its nationally ranked gymnastics and rowing teams. Alumni include Olympic athletes, renowned scientists, and influential figures in various fields.
