“Supplique”, the metal sculpture, stands tall and proud in front of the Argenteuil city hall. It is the work of William Castano, a local artist from Argenteuil. The sculpture was unveiled on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Philippe Doucet, the mayor of Argenteuil, and the city council were present for the occasion. “Supplique” is a powerful reminder of the abolition of slavery, a turning point in history that deserves to be remembered. It was a dark time when people were treated like objects, stripped of their basic human rights. Their voices were silenced, and their freedom taken away. But then, the day came when a united stand was made against oppression. The shackles of slavery were broken, and the freedoms of all people were recognized. This sculpture reminds us that fighting for justice and equality is a fight worth having. It is a reminder that we must never take our freedom for granted and to always stand up for what is right.
