Have you ever wondered why a small park in Lincoln Park is named after a local resident? Supera Park is a playground with a sandbox located on Racine Avenue, just one block south of Wrightwood Avenue. It is named after Louis Supera, a man who dedicated his life to the betterment of his community. He was passionate about youth programs, particularly the Better Boys Club, the Menominee Club for boys and girls, and the Lincoln Park Conservation Association.
The park itself has an interesting history. It was one of 42 playgrounds developed by the City in 1950 to meet the recreational needs of the post-World War II Chicago community. While it was initially called Racine-Draper Park, the name was changed to Supera Park in 1990 by community members who wanted to honor their beloved resident.
The park has been renovated at least three times since it was handed over to the Chicago Park District in 1957. Most recently, the park was equipped with a soft-surface playground, featuring a pirate ship-themed climbing structure, that has become a favorite among local kids and their parents. It’s a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors and connect with their community.
