Beneath the Chicago sky, stands Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church. It is more than just a building. It is a beacon of hope in the North Lawndale community. Let’s delve into its story.
Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church’s journey is intertwined with Pastor J.E. Storey. He was elected pastor December 30, 1990. He took responsibility for the church’s spiritual growth. Under his leadership, the congregation grew spiritually and numerically.
Pastor Storey was born September 15, 1954. He was one of thirteen children. Before dedicating himself fully to the ministry, he worked in Information Technology. He designed systems for Fortune 500 companies for 34 years.
In March 1992, a significant milestone was achieved. The mortgage on the church located on 1709 W. Roosevelt was burned. This happened nine years ahead of schedule. This underscored the congregation’s commitment.
Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Pastor Storey envisioned a brighter future. On the first Sunday of August 1998, the Sunrise Baptist family broke ground. They were building a newly structured sanctuary. The church has secured most of the surrounding properties. This shows their dedication to expansion. In October 2007, they broke ground for a community center. This would stand adjacent to the church.
Pastor Storey is blessed with his wife, Lady Di. People seek her counsel from all ethnic groups. She offers gifts for singing, teaching, speaking, and counseling. They are proud parents of five children and fourteen grandchildren.
Assistant Pastor Jimmy L. Berdin also plays a vital role. He rededicated his life to God. He moved his membership to Sunrise Baptist Church in August 2004. There he was ordained in 2005. He preaches, teaches bible class and performs funerals. He also provides counseling.
In November 2016, Rev. Berdin partnered with Sunrise Baptist Church. Together, they aimed to make a greater impact. He was elevated to Assistant Pastor over outreach ministry in 2017.
A youth program called “Keepers of the Village” was started in North Lawndale. They partnered with Chicago Public Schools’ Safe Haven Program. The program mentors, tutors, and teaches anti-bullying. It also feeds students after school.
Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church is a testament to faith. It demonstrates community and vision. The church continues to transform lives. It empowers those without hope. It offers spiritual healing and restores families. Through the guidance of Pastor Storey and Assistant Pastor Berdin, the church is building God’s kingdom. It regenerates and retrains people. The church helps them become productive citizens.
As you stand here, consider the countless lives touched by this church. It stands as a reminder of faith’s power. Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church is more than just a location. It is a living story of faith, community, and unwavering dedication.
