Beneath the wide Auckland sky, Sunnyhills unfolds along the Tāmaki River. Did you know Sunnyhills wasn’t always a suburb? This land, once a patchwork of farms in the Pakuranga Town District, transformed in the mid-1960s. Imagine fields of wheat waving in the breeze, later replaced by grazing cows. This rural landscape then gave way to the charming homes we see today in Sunnyhills. The suburb’s development was praised for its unique house designs and forward-thinking features. Sunnyhills boasted underground telephone and power cables, a modern marvel at the time. In 1970, Sunnyhills Primary School opened its doors, welcoming the children of this growing community. Sunnyhills rests within the ancestral lands of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. They descended from the crew of the Tainui waka, who journeyed here around 1300. The Tāmaki River mouth held special significance, known as Te Wai ō Tāiki, “The Waters of Tāiki”. This honored a revered Ngāi Tai ancestor. Long before European settlement, Ngāi Tai cultivated the fertile lands along the river. Ōhuiarangi, or Pigeon Mountain, held a significant place in their culture. It provided a vital food source and was named after a respected ancestress. Now, Sunnyhills is a vibrant blend of cultures and histories. It boasts a population of nearly 6,000, a mix of European, Māori, Pasifika, and Asian heritage. As you wander through the streets of Sunnyhills, imagine the layers of stories beneath your feet. From ancient waka voyages to bustling modern life, Sunnyhills offers a unique glimpse into the heart of East Auckland.
