Didn’t Sungai Dua used to be all farms? Not so long ago Sungai Dua was an agricultural area. Today Sungai Dua is a residential neighborhood within George Town. It is located in the Malaysian state of Penang. Sungai Dua is 8.7 km south of the city center.
Sungai Dua got its name from the Sungai Dua River. This river runs through the area. The river flows from east to west. Eventually it empties into the South Channel at Putra Marine Resort. You can find this at Queensbay. Much of the river is canalised. This is typical for rivers on the eastern shore of Penang Island.
In the 1970s Sungai Dua began its development. This followed the establishment of Universiti Sains Malaysia. This is located adjacent to Sungai Dua. The 1980s saw the construction of high-rises. These included apartments and flats. These were built to house the influx of university students.
Jalan Sungai Dua is the main road here. This road serves the neighborhood. You might notice traffic congestion near Sungai Dua village. This is due to cars parked along the road.
Universiti Sains Malaysia is situated just north of Sungai Dua. This is Penang’s premier public university. It was ranked fifth in Malaysia by QS World University Rankings in 2016. Phor Tay High School is also located in Sungai Dua. It is the only public Buddhist school in Malaysia.
There is a Lotus’s hypermarket in Sungai Dua. It meets the retail needs of the community. Also Suiwah Corporation operates the Sunshine Lip Sin supermarket here.
Sungai Dua is bordered by several areas. To the north is Universiti Sains Malaysia. To the east is Sungai Nibong. To the west is Bukit Jambul. Sungai Dua includes Taman Lip Sin and Taman Pekaka.
