“Isn’t Sundbyøster bursting at the seams?” a young mother wondered aloud, pushing a pram along Amagerbrogade. Her companion chuckled. “Well, it certainly feels that way sometimes! Did you know it’s the most densely populated district in Copenhagen?” They strolled further into Sundbyøster, the vibrant energy of the area swirling around them. Sundbyøster, nestled on the island of Amager, pulses with a unique rhythm. This district, bordered by Christianshavn, Sundbyvester, and the shimmering Øresund strait, boasts a fascinating history. Originally, Sundbyøster and its western twin, Sundbyvester, were humble villages dating back to around 1100. Imagine rows of farmsteads stretching from Amager Road, now the bustling Amagerbrogade, their lands divided between farmland and pastures. Over centuries, this rural landscape transformed. Sailors, craftsmen, and workers, drawn by the promise of opportunity, settled along the main road, gradually shaping the Sundbyøster we know today. The 19th century brought a wave of industrialization. Factories and workshops, seeking space and freedom, migrated from the confines of Christianshavn to Sundbyøster. One such pioneer was Jacob Holm, who, between 1808 and 1812, established a smock mill, an oil press, a glue factory, and a rope walk in the area. This industrial growth fueled a population boom, and by 1890, Sundbyøster, along with Sundbyvester, boasted a population of 13,310. This growth, however, came with its challenges. Sundbyøster struggled with economic, social, and sanitary issues. These growing pains ultimately led to its incorporation into Copenhagen in 1902, after a brief seven-year period as an independent parish. Today, Sundbyøster retains its vibrant character, a blend of historical charm and modern dynamism. Its population density, a testament to its enduring appeal, makes it a truly unique corner of Copenhagen.
