The red brick whispers tales of a bygone era. Sundby Kirke stands before you a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest church in northern Amager a quiet giant watching over Copenhagen for generations.

Built in 1870 Sundby Kirke was designed by the talented Hans Jørgen Holm. Imagine the bustling activity of its construction in 1869. People from Sundby tirelessly worked to raise funds building this beacon of hope. They needed this church. The old church in Tårnby was five kilometers away a journey too far for many especially in harsh winters.

Sundby Kirke’s history is woven into the fabric of Amager. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of solace weddings baptisms and funerals. It has witnessed countless joyous celebrations and moments of quiet reflection. Notice the cruciform plan. The octagonal flèche atop the roof is striking. The Neo-Romanesque design is quite elegant. The details are exquisite. Look closely at the corner lesenes and round arched friezes on the gables.

In 1941 a porch was added to the nave’s southwest gable. This porch features a bronze door designed by artist Max Andersen. This door installed in 1974 commemorates the church’s 100th anniversary. The scenes depicted on the door tell the Passion of Christ. The tympanum’s relief is a remarkable mirror of the one above Absalon Church’s entrance. Such a fascinating detail connecting two significant Copenhagen churches.

Sundby Kirke has known change and growth. Nathanael’s Parish separated in 1899 a significant event in the church’s history. Extensive renovations by Frederik Zeuthen and Cai Bertelsen took place in 1963. These brought Sundby Kirke to the beauty you see today.

Sundby Kirke isn’t just a building. It’s a living part of Copenhagen. It continues to serve the community its doors always open to welcome all who seek comfort or community. Take a moment to appreciate this remarkable piece of history. Let its quiet strength resonate within you. Sundby Kirke a symbol of faith enduring through time.
