Has anyone ever told you about the Aitken’s Gap Gaol? It’s right here, a silent sentinel on the grounds of the Sunbury Police Station. You might be surprised to learn this little bluestone building had a whole other life before it came to the station. The Sunbury Police Station is a hub of activity, a place where the law never sleeps. But this unassuming building behind me holds a special piece of history. It’s the Aitken’s Gap Gaol, and it originally stood in a gold rush town called Aitken’s Gap. Back in 1857, during the chaos of the gold rush, this gaol was built to house prisoners and protect gold on its way to Melbourne. The town bustled, and the gaol saw its fair share of drama. But as quickly as it sprang up, Aitken’s Gap faded. The gaol remained, a lonely reminder of a bygone era. In a remarkable twist of fate, the gaol was dismantled brick by brick and brought here to the Sunbury Police Station in 1990. Today, it stands as a tangible link to those heady gold rush days, a silent witness to the passage of time.
