Planted over 170 years ago it’s a unique collection of North American Bald Cypress trees Taxodium distichum a species extinct in Europe since the Ice Age. Imagine the foresight of Councilor Johann Gottfried Bröse who first planted these trees in 1841. He envisioned this beautiful alley connecting the old town and the Brandenburg Cathedral across the Havel River.
The Sumpfzypressenallee Grillendamm has faced challenges. Storms in 2000 and 2003 caused significant damage. Several trees were lost others needed extensive pruning and cabling to ensure their survival. The community rallied together. After a devastating storm in August 2023 three more magnificent Sumpfzypressen were lost. Yet the spirit of the alley lives on. Thanks to donations and sponsorships three new saplings were planted in April 2024. These young trees represent hope and continuity. They symbolize the enduring power of nature and the dedication of the people of Brandenburg an der Havel.
