How about a little riddle? What Chicago landmark is both a symbol of survival and a bit of a “castellated monstrosity?” I am talking about the Chicago Water Tower.

The Chicago Water Tower stands tall. It is a landmark in the heart of Chicago. This tower has a story etched in its limestone. It is more than just a pretty building. It is a symbol of resilience.

Built in 1869, the Chicago Water Tower was designed by William Boyington. Its purpose was practical. It was to house a 138-foot standpipe. This pipe regulated water pressure from the nearby pumping station. The tower’s design is castellated Gothic Revival style. It used yellow Joliet limestone.

But it’s the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that truly cemented the Chicago Water Tower’s place in history. While much of the city burned, the tower stood strong. It became a beacon of hope amidst the devastation. It was not the only building to survive. But it became the most iconic.

Ironically, the pumping station stopped working during the fire. The roof caught fire. It collapsed into the pumps. This stopped the water supply. However, the Chicago Water Tower structure itself survived.

Oscar Wilde, known for his wit, wasn’t a fan of the tower’s design. He called it a “castellated monstrosity with pepper boxes stuck all over it”. Yet, he admired the pumping machinery inside. Interestingly, the tower’s castle-like style inspired White Castle restaurant designs.

Today, the Chicago Water Tower houses the City Gallery. It is an art gallery run by the Chicago Office of Tourism. It showcases local talent. The small park surrounding the tower is named for former Chicago mayor, Jane Byrne.

The Chicago Water Tower has undergone renovations over the years. These renovations ensure it remains a symbol for generations to come. It stands as a reminder of Chicago’s spirit. It embodies the city’s “I Will” attitude. It is a proud landmark.
