Legends say Empress Jingu prayed to the Sumiyoshi Sanjin. These deities helped her conquer ancient Korean kingdoms. Now, we stand before Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka. It is a place of immense historical and cultural importance.

Sumiyoshi Shrine is thought to be the birthplace of all Sumiyoshi Shrines in Japan. This hallowed ground is believed to house the god of safe ocean travel. People come here seeking protection from misfortune. This is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyushu.

The shrine’s history stretches back over 1800 years. Sailors once frequented Sumiyoshi Shrine. They prayed for safe passage to China and Korea. The shrine was revered by the imperial court. Famous poet Sogi patroned it. He sought inspiration from the god of Japanese poetry here.

Notice the Main Hall. Kuroda Nagamasa rebuilt it. The hall showcases Sumiyoshizukuri architecture. This ancient style predates Buddhism’s arrival. The Main Hall is an Important Cultural Asset.

Take a moment to wander the grounds of Sumiyoshi Shrine. Stone lanterns line the path. The trees offer shade. A sense of calm washes over you. Each statue tells a story.

There is a special Noh stage tucked away. It dates back to 1938. This stage remarkably survived World War 2. It can be hired for performances. There is one condition though. You must wear white socks on the sacred platform.

Notice the statue of an ancient sumo wrestler near the Main Hall. His chiseled physique exudes power. Tradition says his palm lines resemble the kanji for power. Rub his hands. Absorb some of his strength.

Sumiyoshi Shrine hosts events every month. The Nagoshi Grand Festival occurs from July 30 to August 1. People walk through a giant thatched ring. This wards off illness. A sumo tournament happens between October 12 and 14.

Sumiyoshi Shrine is one of the Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines. The Sumiyoshi Sanjin are enshrined here. These deities protected seafarers. They are tied to poetry and sumo wrestling.

The kami, or gods, enshrined are Sumiyoshi Sanjin. Also enshrined are Empress Jingu and Amaterasu. According to legend, Empress Jingu had a hand in constructing the three major Sumiyoshi Shrines.

The Sumiyoshi Shrine’s origins are rooted in myth. Records of the shrine go back 1300 years. But, shrine literature claims it was established 1800 years ago. The earliest known record dates back to the year 737.

Consider this: the Sumiyoshi Sanjin may be the three main stars in the constellation Orion. Their connection to seafaring may stem from the constellation’s role in maritime navigation.

As you leave Sumiyoshi Shrine consider its enduring legacy. It’s more than a historical site. It is a living testament to Japan’s rich spiritual heritage. It has been a beacon of hope and protection for centuries.
