Built in 1859 the Sümer Camii stands proudly. It was commissioned during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecit I. This beautiful mosque served the workers of the Hereke Halı ve İpekli Dokuma Fabrikası. They needed a place to worship. The Sümer Camii’s dome is a marvel. It’s constructed of Horasan mortar. This ancient technique ensures its enduring strength. The Sümer Camii’s minaret is truly unique. It remains in its original form. It’s built of brick. Notice the stone stairs. They were added later. This is why the staircase is positioned in the middle of the mosque. The Sümer Camii’s pulpit and dome have also survived intact. However the interior decorations were restored. A modest grave lies in the mosque’s courtyard. An inscription identifies the deceased as Mehmet Efendi. A significant detail about the Sümer Camii is often overlooked. Its first restoration was undertaken by Musa Efendi. He was the first teacher at the Hereke factory. His tomb is located in the entrance hall. It was officially registered as a protected cultural heritage site. This happened on July 28 1992. The decision was made by the Istanbul II Cultural Assets Protection Regional Board.
