Ever heard of Sumang the warrior-diplomat? Sumang’s story is woven into the very fabric of Punggol. He founded Kampong Wak Sumang one of Singapore’s earliest fishing villages. This kampong thrived for over a century reflecting the changing community at Punggol Point.

Sumang wasn’t just any villager. He was a skilled musician. His violin playing was legendary. Some say birds stopped flying when he played. This talent however led to a problem. He caught the eye of the Lingga Sultan’s daughter. Already married with three sons Sumang fled the court to avoid a scandal.

His journey led him to Punggol. He established his kampong there. Sumang’s legacy lives on. His descendants built on his achievements. They even negotiated with the government. They secured tax exemptions for their land. This ensured their family could live there for generations.

Sumang also dug a well a five-metre-deep well. Legend says it never ran dry. Villagers believed its water had healing properties. They used it to cure fevers and epileptic fits. The well became a focal point of the kampong.

Masjid Wak Sumang another testament to Sumang’s influence was built. It began as a small shrine by the sea. After World War II the villagers rebuilt it into a mosque. It served as a religious centre and community hub. Even Richard Nixon then US vice-president visited.

The kampong eventually made way for development. In the 1980s residents relocated. But Sumang’s spirit remains. His name echoes in Sumang Walk Sumang Lane and Sumang LRT station. These places serve as a reminder of this remarkable man and his enduring impact on Punggol. His story shows the resilience and spirit of early Singapore. It’s a story of music diplomacy and the enduring legacy of a man who shaped a community.
